Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Gym Routine

Start Smaller Than You Think You Should

Most people who quit the gym in their first month did not quit because training was too hard. They quit because the plan they wrote on day one assumed a version of themselves who never gets tired, never travels, and never has a bad week. A routine that survives contact with real life beats a perfect routine every time.

Three sessions a week, forty-five minutes each, is enough to change how you look and feel within a few months. Two sessions a week done for a year will beat six sessions a week abandoned in March.

Build the Habit Before the Programme

For the first two weeks, treat attendance as the only metric that matters. Show up, move through a short full-body circuit, and leave with energy in the tank. Once turning up is automatic, adding load and complexity is the easy part.

  • Pick fixed days and times, and treat them like appointments.
  • Pack your bag the night before so mornings need no decisions.
  • Learn five movements well rather than twenty movements badly.
  • End every session feeling like you could have done one more set.

What Progress Actually Looks Like

Scale weight is the noisiest signal you can track. Sleep quality, resting heart rate, how many stairs you can climb before you notice, and whether the same weight feels lighter this month than last — those move earlier and lie less. Book a body scan at the end of month one and again at month three, and let the trend do the talking.

Wish I had read this before my first month — the attendance-only rule is spot on.

The point about scale weight being noisy is one more people need to hear.
