What a Newborn Is Actually Learning
Very little of what happens in the first three months looks like learning, and almost all of it is. A baby is working out where their own edges are, that sounds come from directions, that a face returns after it leaves, and that being uncomfortable is a temporary state. None of that needs equipment.
What it does need is repetition. The same voice, the same few songs, the same order of events around a bath or a change. Predictability is the whole curriculum, and it is free.
Narrate Everything
Say what you are doing while you do it, even when it feels absurd. Babies exposed to more speech in the first year hear more of the rhythm and pitch patterns their own language runs on, and a running commentary during a nappy change is as good a source as any book.
- Respond to sounds, not only to crying — a returned coo is a conversation.
- Keep one or two songs fixed to one or two moments of the day.
- Hold books at twenty-five centimetres and expect them to be looked past.
- Let there be quiet time as well; constant stimulation is not the goal.
- Dress in layers you can remove, because an overheated baby learns nothing.
The Milestones Are a Range
Social smiling arrives somewhere between six and twelve weeks. Head control firms up across the same window. Both are ranges, not deadlines, and a baby who reaches one late is not behind on the other. The comparison that helps is with the same baby a fortnight ago.
The most advanced developmental tool in the house is an adult who answers when the baby makes a noise.
Twenty must-have items, honestly counted, come to about six. The rest of the list is time, and there is no version of it you can order.
