Play Before They Can Play
A newborn cannot play in any sense a toy catalogue would recognise, and that is exactly why the first three months are the easiest ones to get right. What a baby needs is a face at the correct distance, a small amount of contrast to look at, and a floor to lie on. Everything after that is for the adults.
Focus lands at roughly twenty to thirty centimetres for the first weeks, which is the distance between a baby in arms and the person holding them. High-contrast patterns hold attention longer than colour does, and a slowly moving face beats both. None of this requires a purchase.
Floor Time, Early and Often
Short spells on the front, several times a day, from the first week. Two or three minutes at a time is plenty. It builds the neck and shoulder strength that everything else depends on, and it is much easier to establish as a habit before a baby is old enough to have an opinion about it.
- A firm flat surface — a folded blanket on the floor beats any padded mat.
- Clothing that does not bunch at the chest: a romper with leg poppers, not a waistband.
- One rattle or crinkle toy, held to the side rather than dangled overhead.
- A mirror at floor level, from about week eight.
- Your own face, which remains the best object in the room.
What Not To Buy Yet
Bouncers, walkers, activity centres and anything that holds a baby upright are all for later, and most of them are for much later. A rocking horse and a play frame are wonderful things to own; they are not first-quarter purchases, and buying them early mostly means storing them.
For the first twelve weeks, the best toy in the house is a person who is willing to sit on the floor.
Play in the first three months is really just attention, delivered in short bursts, at close range. Dress for the floor, get down on it, and let the rest of the catalogue wait.
