Nobody asks which language to learn first because they care about syntax. They ask because they want to know which one leads somewhere. So answer the real question instead: what do you want to have built in six months? A website, a data pipeline and a phone app point at three different starting points, and only one of them is yours.
Three Honest Starting Points
JavaScript if you want to see your work in a browser the same evening – the feedback loop is the shortest in the industry. Python if you are heading towards data, automation or machine learning, because the libraries are where the field actually lives. Java or C# if you are aiming at a large employer with an existing codebase, where the language is chosen for you anyway.
The Second Language Is the Easy One
Most of what you learn in the first six months is not the language. It is loops, state, debugging, reading an error message without panic, and the habit of breaking a problem into parts small enough to test. Those transfer whole. Pick one, stay with it long enough to finish something, and the next one takes weeks rather than months.
