Studying Around a Full-Time Job: A Schedule That Holds

Evenings Are the Worst Slot You Have

The hour after dinner is the one everybody plans with and the one nobody keeps. It is also the hour when your attention is at its worst. Four mornings of forty minutes beats two evenings of two hours, and it survives a bad day at work in a way that an evening plan never does.

One Course at a Time

Enrolling in three courses feels like progress and produces none. Finishing one changes what you can do; being thirty per cent through three changes nothing. Park the others – they will still be there, and you will get through them faster once the first one has taught you how you learn.

Ship Something Small Every Fortnight

A finished small thing is worth more than a half-built ambitious one, both for your motivation and for the portfolio you will eventually show somebody. Set the bar at something you can finish in two weekends and let the scope of the next one grow on its own.

Moving my study hour to the morning is the only change that has ever stuck.

Guilty of the three-courses-at-once thing. Finishing one really does feel different.
