It comes from texture, from light and from things being soft where you touch them. A room can hold six objects and feel warm, or sixty and feel like a waiting area. What decides it is whether the surfaces invite contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"\">So the rule is simple to state and hard to keep: reduce the number of things, and raise the quality of every surface that remains. Wool instead of polyester, oiled wood instead of lacquer, ceramic instead of moulded plastic. Fewer decisions, each one made properly.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 style=\"\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where the Warmth Actually Comes From<\/h4>\n\n\n<ul style=\"\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\t<li>Light below eye level. One lamp on the floor or a low table does more than three on the ceiling.<\/li>\n\t<li>A rug with pile deep enough to feel underfoot without shoes.<\/li>\n\t<li>Boucle, wool or heavy linen on the one seat everybody uses.<\/li>\n\t<li>Wood you can see the grain in, on a piece you touch every day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h4 style=\"\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep the Evidence of Living<\/h4>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"\">A folded throw left where somebody actually dropped it, a stack of books that is genuinely being read, a pair of mugs on the low table \u2014 these are what separate a calm room from a showroom. Minimalism that removes the evidence of living removes the reason for the room. Tidy the surfaces, not the traces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\t<p>Cosiness is not clutter. It is the small number of things you chose being pleasant to touch.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"\">Test it in the evening rather than the afternoon.
