Before buying anything, measure the tallest unbroken run of wall you have and treat that number as the budget. A tall narrow unit on the right wall holds more than a wide low one on the wrong wall, and it leaves the floor free, which is what actually makes a room feel bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"\">Depth matters more than width in a small room. Anything over 40 centimetres deep starts to intrude on the walking line, and a piece you have to edge past will annoy you every day for years. Shallow and tall beats deep and low almost every time.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 style=\"\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Storage That Earns Its Footprint<\/h4>\n\n\n<ul style=\"\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\t<li>A bed with a slatted base and drawers underneath, which is a whole wardrobe you do not have to find room for.<\/li>\n\t<li>A console deep enough to be a desk, so one piece serves two jobs at different times of day.<\/li>\n\t<li>Open shelving for the things you use weekly, closed storage for everything else \u2014 visible clutter is what shrinks a room, not full cupboards.<\/li>\n\t<li>A side unit on castors, so the layout can change for guests and change back.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h4 style=\"\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The One-In, One-Out Shelf<\/h4>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"\">Reserve one shelf as the overflow shelf and never let it grow. When it is full, something leaves the house. It sounds arbitrary and it works, because the alternative is a slow spread into every other surface in the room until the storage you bought is the reason you need more storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\t<p>In a small room, the floor is the most valuable surface you own. Spend it carefully.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"\">Photograph the room before you buy anything and again a month later.
