Small Space, Big Style: Smart Storage Ideas

Measure the Wall, Not the Room

Small rooms are rarely short of space; they are short of usable wall. Before buying anything, measure the tallest unbroken run of wall you have and treat that number as the budget. A tall narrow unit on the right wall holds more than a wide low one on the wrong wall, and it leaves the floor free, which is what actually makes a room feel bigger.

Depth matters more than width in a small room. Anything over 40 centimetres deep starts to intrude on the walking line, and a piece you have to edge past will annoy you every day for years. Shallow and tall beats deep and low almost every time.

Storage That Earns Its Footprint

  • A bed with a slatted base and drawers underneath, which is a whole wardrobe you do not have to find room for.
  • A console deep enough to be a desk, so one piece serves two jobs at different times of day.
  • Open shelving for the things you use weekly, closed storage for everything else โ€” visible clutter is what shrinks a room, not full cupboards.
  • A side unit on castors, so the layout can change for guests and change back.

The One-In, One-Out Shelf

Reserve one shelf as the overflow shelf and never let it grow. When it is full, something leaves the house. It sounds arbitrary and it works, because the alternative is a slow spread into every other surface in the room until the storage you bought is the reason you need more storage.

In a small room, the floor is the most valuable surface you own. Spend it carefully.

Photograph the room before you buy anything and again a month later. The difference is usually not in how much you own but in how much of the floor you can see.

The depth rule is right. We swapped a deep sideboard for a shallow one and gained a whole walkway.

Under-bed drawers replaced an entire chest for us.
