Start With the Wood, Not the Palette
Japandi rooms are usually described by their colours, which is why so many of them end up beige and cold. The warmth comes from the timber. Pick one wood — oak, ash or walnut — and let every other wooden thing in the room agree with it, including the floor if you can. Two woods a shade apart read as a mistake; two woods a long way apart read as a decision.
Once the wood is settled, the palette follows on its own. Plaster, oat, linen and a single deeper note for contrast will carry a whole room, and the deeper note is what stops it looking unfinished. Put it somewhere solid — a chair, a rug, a door — rather than scattering it through cushions.
The Four Things That Do the Work
- One low seat with a visible frame, so the room keeps its floor line.
- A rug with texture rather than pattern, large enough that the front legs of every seat sit on it.
- Two light sources at different heights, neither of them on the ceiling.
- One object that is clearly handmade and slightly irregular.
Leave the Corners Alone
The instinct is to fill every corner, and it is the fastest way to lose the calm the style is built on. A corner with nothing in it is doing a job: it gives the eye somewhere to rest, and it makes the pieces you did choose look deliberate. If a corner feels wrong empty, a single tall plant will settle it better than a console and a lamp.
A Japandi room is not a room with fewer things in it. It is a room where every thing had to argue its way in.
Live with it for a fortnight before adding anything else. Almost every room that reads as cluttered was finished in one weekend, and almost every room that reads as calm was finished over a season.
